If you’re wondering how to clean your solar screens – congratulations! This means you have most likely installed sun screens on your home’s windows or are at least beginning to collect information. Solar screens are an excellent investment in your home, possessions, family and wallet. As if this weren’t enough, solar screens are also a great way to help protect our precious earth.
Because they are installed on the outside of your home, solar screens can and will become dirty over time. Luckily, they are also relatively easy to clean and care for. Follow these simple steps if you feel your screens have become a bit dusty or after one of Arizona’s famous haboobs blows through!
Step 1: Collect Your Supplies
To properly clean your solar screens, you will need the following materials: a screwdriver, your hose, a bucket, mild soap or screen cleaning detergent, and a soft cloth or soft-bristle brush.
Step 2: Take Your Screens Off Your Windows
For regularly shaped and easily accessible windows, use your screwdriver to unscrew and remove your solar screens. Gently place them up against a wall or on any clean, flat surface. (Don’t forget to keep all the screws together in a small box or bag for an easier reinstall).
Safety First! Do not attempt to remove and clean screens that are hard to reach or irregularly shaped. Please contact a professional to clean these types of screens.
Step 3: Time to Get Washing
Using a special screen detergent or simply mild soap, fill your bucket with warm, soapy water. Using your brush or cloth, begin gently scrubbing your solar screens. You can choose to start scrubbing horizontally and then vertically or vice versa. The only rule here is to be sure to scrub in at least two directions because solar screens are so tightly woven. To be extra sure your screens are properly cleaned, follow this step on the other side.
Step 4: Rinse Screens
This step is easy, quick, and some fun! Simply rinse your screens off with a hose on both sides. Make sure to rinse thoroughly to ensure no soapy residue is left on either side of the screen.
Step 5: Drying Time
This step won’t take long in our Arizona sunshine. Simply lean your screens up against a fence or their house and let the sun do the rest. If you’re feeling really ambitious, use this time to clean the outside of your glass windows for an even better view (or just take a break inside, we won’t tell anyone).
Step 6: Reinstallation
Once your screens are dry, use your screwdriver and screw the screens back onto your windows. Make sure to be careful in this step. For larger windows it might be smart to have a friend help you, to ensure that the screens are aligned properly.
Why Choose to Buy Solar Screens?
As mentioned above, solar screens are a great investment that help to protect your possessions, family, wallet and the environment. Solar screens are custom fitted screens made from a high quality PVC material called Textilene. This material blocks 80-90% of the sun’s harmful UV rays from even reaching your window.
It is estimated that solar screens also block about 48% of the sun’s heat from entering your home.
Blocking these rays reduces the risk of damaging your drapes or carpeting from sun damage and exposing your family to UV rays while inside. Blocking these rays and heat also reduce your need to keep the air conditioning on full-blast – allowing you to protect your wallet as well as reduce your carbon footprint.
