- $13 Repurposed Shower Curtains
A quick online search will return that new shower curtains typically cost about $13, although it is easy to find them on sale in many stores. If you pick the right pattern, you can add life to any space by repurposing it as a valance or window curtains for the kitchen, or a child’s playroom. - $10 Stencils for Grown-Ups
Stencils aren’t just for kids! It is possible to give cheaper curtains a luxurious make over using oversized stencils to create interesting patterns. Be sure to get some help with this one, as it is important the curtain remain completely flat while being stenciled. - $9 Drop Cloth Drapes
For $9, DIY Show Off was able to create custom and chic drapery. Designer Roeshel painted lyrics from a favorite poem onto an inexpensive painter’s drop cloth to make cool curtains that added a personal touch to the space. - $8 Fold Me Pretty
By creating dramatic and deep pleats, it is easy to make inexpensive burlap look luxurious. Once pleated, staple the fabric to a board and affix it atop the window for a quick and easy valance. - $6 Grandma’s Vintage Books
Try this look in your kids’ reading nook or your sitting room. String pages of vintage books on a wire. Bunch the pages up and use them as an inexpensive and interesting valance. A valance is a covering at the top of a window, intended to add charm and keep out the strongest afternoon sun, when it is highest in the sky. Sure to be a great conversation starter! - $5 Fluff my Pillow, Please!
Ever thought of using a pillow case as a window treatment? Traci, from Beneath My Heart understands that shorter and more understated curtains are more appropriate for bathroom spaces. She found a case with an interesting fabric and voila! A fun and spunky addition to the bathroom décor. - $5 Custom Curtain Rods
By spending $5 at a hardware store, it is possible to create custom curtain rods like Karianne from Thistlewood Farms. She used a dowel rod, finials and brackets to finish the look. - $5 – Floral Mason Jars
Mason jars are a must-have in any country or vintage chic living space. To create a one-of-a-kind valance, hang mason jars from twine, and fill them with fresh, local flowers. If you don’t have a green thumb, paying a bit more for false flowers may save you some hassle. - $3 Burlap Coffee Sacks
Burlap coffee sacks are not only extremely inexpensive, they bring an interesting texture to any room and are a very en-vogue fabric of today. Make it even more unique by following the advice from Donna of “Funky Junk Interiors” who use stenciled typography to embellish the burlap sacks even further. Donna was able to create gorgeous window toppers for her kitchen this way for a whopping $3. - $3 Wheels are Turning!
Using rusty steering wheels costing $3 a pop, Kendra from Creative Ambitions used the wheels as unique curtain rods. She simply affixed the wheels at the corners of her windows and draped muslin over them for a cute, rustic look. - $1 Scrap Ties
It’s amazing how beautiful scraps of fabric can look when they are used right! Tie scraps of any fabric on a curtain rod to create a warm and inviting feel. This look is much more successful with smaller windows, such as those in kitchens or children’s bedrooms. - $1 Bamboo Valance
Using bamboo placements costing 99 cents and a little bit of spray paint and ribbon, “Makely School for Girls” designer, Lindsey, was able to create a beautiful scalloped valance for a living room window. - Found Objects Decals
Found objects are always unique and never expensive – making the perfect accent to any window covering. Spray painting local branches or drift wood a crisp white is a great way to add character and class to a cabin or beach house.
