It’s only late June, and already we are hitting record highs on the thermostat. If the kids are sick of doing arts and crafts, making forts, and playing indoor games – you’ve come to the right place. We understand that trying to fill the long summer days in Phoenix can be a task. Especially when even the deepest home pool feels like a bathtub.
Have no fear! We’ll help to keep you out of the heat this summer. We’ve compiled this list of fun and cool activities to do that’ll be sure to fill your days with glee until the first day of school in August.
- Musical Instrument Museum – The Musical Instrument Museum (MIM) has been rated as the #1 attraction to visit in Phoenix on TripAdvisor and ranks within the top 20 museums in the country. It’s not difficult to see why. The museum is packed with over 6,000 instruments from all around the world, with a variety of hands (and ears) on exhibits, sure to entertain the whole family. Additionally on display this summer is the “Dragons & Vines: Inlaid Guitar Masterpieces” exhibit. This special and temporary spectacle features intricately and creatively designed guitar masterpieces from some of North America’s most talented artists. In addition to the interactive exhibits, there are also daily activities – check out their calendar here to see what interests you. July is also “Educator Appreciation Month” which means all teachers can access free entrance every day in July. Admission Prices – Adult: $20; Teens (13-19) $15; Kids (4-12) $10; Children (3 & Under) – Free. Visit the website here.
- Arizona Science Center – The Arizona Science Center has been a local staple for many years. Simply attend for the day and experience hands on daily demos including “Great Balls of Fire”, “Discover DNA” where visitors get to touch real DNA extracted from a strawberry and “States of Matter: Liquid Nitrogen”. Daily visitors can also enjoy large-scale IMAX movies such as “Dream Big”, “Grand Tour of the Solar System” and “Understanding Dark Matter”. You can also sign your child up for “Camp Innovation” in the summer, where children are exposed to STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) learning – including robotics, computer coding, and introduction to 3D printing. Admission Prices – Adult: $18; Child (3-17) $13; 2 & Under – Free. For a limited time – Summer Fun Pass – $38.95 (entrance for 4; all summer long). Explore the website here.
- Cool Off in Natural Water – While best known for our desert scenery, there are also some really “cool” and natural places to cool off this summer. Probably the most obvious is Slide Rock. Slide Rock is about 7 miles north of Sedona, and was voted as one of the top 10 swimming holes in America by The Travel Channel. Slide Rock is just as it sounds, a fun place to slip, slide, and enjoy the refreshingly cool water. Because it is so popular, it can become crowded in the summer. Our favorite choice is Fossil Springs. Fossil Springs is located about 30 miles southeast of Camp Verde. Once you arrive, you’ll be shocked you’re in Arizona. The river is wild, and unobstructed by a dam. The crystal clear water glimmers in shades of teal, green, aqua and deep blue. Walk along the river to find your perfect place, or stop at one of the many waterfalls along the way. This spot is still relatively undiscovered – go there before too many figure it out! Admission Prices – Slide Rock – $20 per car; Fossil Springs – $10 per car. Visit the websites here and here.
