Last week, we wrote a fun and quirky article all about windows. Then we thought, why do windows get to have all the fun? Thus, 6 facts you didn’t know about doors was born.

Doors are everywhere and we use them multiple times per day, however, we never really take the time to stop and think about them. It’s interesting to really dwell on how many doors you pass through on a daily basis: from your bedroom into the bathroom and back, out your front door and into the car door, out the garage door and into the sliding glass doors of the office, pass through the elevator doors… you get the picture.

Doors are pretty important and since we’re in the screen business, we decided to give them the honor they deserve by sharing these 6 fun facts. We hope you enjoy them!

Facts on unique doors in the United States

1. NASA’s Vehicle Assembly Building at Kennedy Space Center are thought accepted as the largest doors in the world, standing at a monstrous 45 stories tall and taking 45 minutes to open or close (nationalgeographic.com).

2. The world’s heaviest door hinged door is located at the American Energy Department. It weighs a whopping 97,000 pounds, is eight feet thick and twelve feet wide. The craziest part? It operates with a special bearing hinge, allowing a single person to open or close it on their own (energy.gov).

Facts that are mysterious and mythical

3. In dreams, doors can take on many meanings. To dream you are walking through a door signifies your entering into a new stage of your life or a new chance to take. It could also signify entering a new level of consciousness. To see an open door in a dream means you are open to new ideas or opportunities. A closed or locked door could signify the end of a phase or project, that something or someone is blocking your progress, or opportunities that have been denied or turned down (dreammoods.com).

4. Many ancient cultures, such as the Egyptians, Mayans, and ancient Indonesians all used similar three door patterns on their most precious and renowned structures. This type of structure is called a Triptych. Some believe these three doors represent the sharing of an advanced “Universal Religion” by ancient cultures.

Facts about door colors

5. Dublin, Ireland is known for the colorful doors of its homes. There are two competing stories to explain the doors, and no one knows which is actually true. The first is the tale of two rowdy writers who were also neighbors – Moore and Gogarty. Gogarty had the bad habit of stumbling home drunk and knocking on Moore’s door, thinking it was his own. To keep him out, Moore painted his door green. Gogarty retaliated by painting his door red, and thus the trend was born. Another myth happily told by tour guides is that after Queen Victoria died, Ireland ordered its citizens to paint their doors black in mourning, and rebellious Dubliners painted their doors bright and happy colors instead. (Doors of Dublin).

6. Many church doors are painted red to symbolize safety and sanctuary. Red doors on churches also memorialize Passover. While seen all over the world, most red door churches are found in Philadelphia (doorandgatecompany.com).

Try this door riddle

Called the “Honest and Dishonest Guards,” this riddle will leave you scratching your head. It goes like this, “You’re in a room with two doors. There’s a guard at each door. One door is the exit, but behind the other door is something that will kill you. You’re told that one guard always tells the truth and the other guard always lies. You don’t know which guard is which. You are allowed to ask one question to either of the guards to determine which door is the exit”.

What question should you ask?
